"Linking theory and practice"
“To me, pragmatism means establishing a link between the possibilities science has to offer and the needs and wishes of our customers. In other words: linking theory and practice. You should be willing to work towards the applications the customer needs and not get bogged down in theory. This means that I am sometimes satisfied with less-than-perfect solutions. What’s more, perfect solutions are often not what most of my customers expect. It is like with modern mobile phones that can do everything. They are often too complicated and too cumbersome to use, especially when all customers want to do is to make telephone calls.
Pragmatism is an approach that I have tried to acquire over the years and which has meanwhile become a trademark of Lasertec. It comes down to asking oneself what the customer really needs and then catering to these needs in a rapid, sound and reliable way. Universities and other research institutions should certainly continue with their research into even better and more precise lasers and tools. For my part, I try to find practical applications for these lasers.
Pragmatism also primarily means doing what is best in a given situation. I avoid excessively weighing up the pros and cons of something, or endlessly going through various scenarios. You either do it, or you don’t! If a customer has a question, he wants a quick answer. That is what we will give him, and, consequently, that is what we ask from our business relations such as ALT. They think along with us, and come up with solutions or critical remarks. This is a pleasant way of working and clarifies matters.
In my private life, I have also adopted a pragmatic attitude. I know that sometimes it would be better for the kids if ...., but depending on the circumstances, I decide to do things differently anyway. Just trying to be pragmatic! But I have to admit I wasn’t always this pragmatic in the past.”
