"Crossing boundaries"
“Crossing boundaries" would be a good description of the work I do. Always on the look-out for even more accurate tools. Accepting tough challenges is something that suits me. If somebody says to me something can’t be done, I immediately ask myself: ‘is that really the case?’. As a technician, you decompose a problem, and you continue until you are left with subproblems that can be solved. ALT not only supplies us with products, they also put us into contact with the right people. Often it is not the ‘standard’ products we need for our work. We are more interested in the technical possibilities behind the products.
The only boundaries we cannot cross, are the laws of physics. But just look at the current level of precision. We have moved beyond nanometres to picometres and the tools will only become more precise in the future! But as science advances, new questions keep arising. Because the more we achieve, the more food for thought nature gives me/us. It is just like a Russian Babushka, each doll contains yet another doll. Trying to get to the bottom of things is what I have been doing ever since I was a child. The new gas stove had only just arrived, and I had already disassembled half the stove to find out how it functioned! This unbounded curiosity is my biggest drive.
My grandfather was a watchmaker, so the urge to disassemble things is perhaps in my genes… My children (16 and 14 years old) assume that dad always has a solution to everything. My daughter, for example, wants to have a walk-in closet, but that would involve rather substantial construction work. So this is out of the question! As in my work, some solutions are too expensive to be feasible. As far as the walk-in closet is concerned, perhaps we’ll get one if we ever move house!”
